To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a specific dermo-cosmetic product in dryness and desquamation in diabetic foot.
First, epidermis thickness (by echography), cutaneous roughness (by fringes projection) and desquamation (by image analysis) were evaluated on 22 and 23 subjects (average 58 and 60 years), respectively, applying twice daily the product during 28 days on their dry and rough heels with callosity. Second, a monocentric observational intra-individual study was performed on 30 diabetic subjects (average 56 years) applying the product at least once a day for 28 days. The efficacy and safety of the study product were assessed by the dermatologist, and by the subjects themselves.
At D28, significant improvements were observed on rough heals (p<0.05): -22% of the epidermis thickness (-70 μm), -33% of the cutaneous roughness (-14 μm), and -73% of the amount of collected corneocytes. The clinical study on diabetic subjects confirmed visible reductions of desquamation (-28%, p<0.05) and dryness (-30%, p<0.001), according to the dermatologist, associated with an effective to a very effective effect in 73% of subjects. The product was also very-well tolerated by 93% of the subjects. All subjects were pleased with the product, regarding foot thickening prevention and smoothing, hydrating, soothing and comfort effects.
The results show that this specific dermo-cosmetic product is suitable to manage foot dryness due to diabetes mellitus and justify its use along with this chronic disease. Daily application of a skincare by these patients should allow them to prevent further feet cutaneous complications.
