Skin dryness affects diabetic patients in 30% of the cases, particularly in type 2. It negatively impacts their quality of life as it is often associated with pruritus. Consequently, the interest and safety of a specific dermo-cosmetic product was assessed in these patients.
A clinical study was performed under dermatological control on 40 diabetic patients (average age 57 years old, 88% type 2) presenting a skin dryness according to the Scaling Roughness Redness and Cracks (SRRC) scale. The patients applied the dermo-cosmetic product once to twice a day on a previously cleansed skin. The hydration rate (corneometer), the clinical efficacy (SRRC, pruritus and insomnia), the quality of life (Dermatological Life Quality Index, DLQI), and the subjective efficacy were assessed at the inclusion visit, day 0 (D0), and after 28 days (D28) of study product application, as well as the tolerance at D28.
At D28, an increase of +38% (p<0.0001) of the hydration rate was observed, as well as a decrease of 66% (4.2 à 1.4, p<0.0001) of the SRRC score corresponding to an improvement of the skin state for 97% of the included patients. Similarly, pruritus and insomnia decreased by 78% (4.2 to 0.9, p<0.0001) and by 82% (4.8 to 0.9, p<0.0001), respectively, corresponding to an improvement of these symptoms on 88% and 75% of the patients, respectively. Furthermore, the product’s application induced an improvement of 71% (6.6 vs 1.9, p<0.0001) in the quality of life of the patients at D28. Finally, the product was very well appreciated by all patients for its nourishing, moisturizing, soothing, comforting and repairing effects and was very well tolerated by all the panel.
This specific dermo-cosmetic significantly improves skin dryness and the quality of life of diabetic patients, and additionally helps patients to overcome the skin discomforts associated with their illness
